Information for Potential Converts
The Conversion process can be extremely overwhelming. Converting requires hours of commitment both to learning about Jewish practice as well as experiencing Jewish ritual. We at the HIR recognize that each person’s journey is unique, and we will try to guide those who show serious commitment and love for Jewish practice and community. We actually refer to our synagogue as “The Bayit”, which means “The Home”, and we definitely want you to feel most welcome.
Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind as you embark on this process:
- Conversion takes minimally a year and may take longer.
- It is important that the potential convert lives in the community.
- The potential convert should attend a class in Basic Jewish Concepts. If the person is already married, it is recommended that his/her spouse attends the classes as well.
- After a semester, the potential convert must enter into extra tutorials.
- A Hebrew Literacy course is highly recommended.
- Familiarity with key books about Jewish practice, history, and culture.
- Regular attendance at synagogue services is required. The Learning Service meets every week at 10am in the Bayit.
- Commitment to provide children with a Jewish education
- The HIR does not take any money for conversions.
