ALERT : The death camp Auschwitz is the very symbol of the Holocaust. Over 1 million of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis died there. On Monday, January 24th, the United Nations conducts a first-ever general session on the Holocaust to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. At 9 a.m., one hour before the session opens, Rabbi Avi Weiss, who led controversial demonstrations at Auschwitz to protest the presence of a Catholic convent and a Catholic church there, will hold a news conference opposite the world body at the Isaiah Peace Wall, First Avenue & 43rd Street. Rabbi Weiss will speak out against what he terms "the christianization of the symbols of the Holocaust at Auschwitz, the central point of the Nazi evil. The SS commandant's headquarters building has been turned into a Catholic church with large crosses on top and in front. The church is a desecration of the memory of over a million of our brethren who were gassed and tortured to death at Auschwitz only because they were Jews." In 1989, Rabbi Weiss led a group of peaceful protesters at the then-Carmelite convent at Auschwitz. They were physically attacked by Polish workmen hired by the nuns. During the 50th anniversary commemoration of Auschwitz's liberation in 1995, Rabbi Weiss led another group which staged a 7-hour sit-in at the church at Auschwitz until the protesters were arrested by Polish police. Rabbi Weiss is national present of Amcha-The Coalition for Jewish Concerns, as well as senior rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale in the Bronx. A Monumental Failure at Belzec Part II Filing suit to prevent desecrations of Holocaust victims at Belzec PROMINENT RABBI ISUES JEWISH GROUP OVER CONSTRUCTION OF TRENCH AT POLISH DEATH CAMP New York A prominent rabbi filed suit on Friday, July 18th, against the American Jewish Committee (AJC), seeking injunctive relief to stop construction of a trench that it is digging at the Belzec death camp in southeast Poland. This trench will disturb the ashes and bones of Holocaust victims that cover the entire surface of the camp and further disturb the human remains that lie underneath. The suit does not seek to stop any other aspect of the work at Belzec, much of which will have a positive effect on that site. The plaintiff, Amcha National President Rabbi Avi Weiss, lost seven members of his family at Belzec, including two aunts, two uncles and three cousins. Rabbi Weiss isa long-time activist in the preservation of Holocaust memory and, as editor of Haggadah for the Yom Hashoah Seder, a leader in efforts to create rituals to memorialize the Holocaust. Co-plaintiff RosaSacharin ofGlasgow, Scotland, believes her brother was murdered at Belzec. Rabbi Weiss and Ms.Sacharin are represented by Steven Lieberman, located at 1425 K Street NW, Washington, DC20005. In the process of building this trench, some of the worst desecrations of Holocaust victim remains have occurred. These desecrations are continuing today, said Rabbi Weiss. Photograph © Robert Kalfus 2003 8/9/02 Click here for update 8/23/02 City Council Passes Resolution to Close the PLO Office in New York New York's City Council Overwhelmingly passed a resolution today, which calls for the closure of the PLO office on Park Avenue in New York City. Calling the office a "danger" to New Yorkers, and labeling the Palestinian Authority a terrorist organization, the resolution asks the President to work with the United Nations to seek the immediate closure of the office. "This is a great victory," said Rabbi Avi Weiss, President of the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, whose organization lobbied heavily on behalf of the resolution. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, Vice-President of the Coalition for Jewish Concerns said, "This is the first step in our process of closing the doors of the PLO's Mission to the United Nations. Now that the Council has spoken, we intend to announce legal action to actually evict the PLO." Of the fifty-two members of the council only six voted against the resolution.
